Smoke

Smoke Hazards and Sublethal Effects

According to a study by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), smoke has a large factor in many fire-related injuries and casualties. ALL combustible construction and furnishing products can produce harmful smoke, making this a concern especially for the workplace. It is reported that up to 70-75% of fire victims succumbed to smoke inhalation.

Sublethal Effects of Smoke
  1. Incapacitation.
  2. Reduced egress speed due to sensory irritation, heat or radiation injury, reduced motor capacity, visual obstruction, and/or decreased mentail acuity.
  3. Longterm psychological effects.

WIND

Hurricane Strengths by Category

  1. Category 1 – Minimal – Minor damage to surroundings, mostly foliage.
  2. Category 2 – Moderate – Medium to major damage. Major damage to exposed mobile homes.
  3. Category 3 – Extensive – Serious flooding. Coastal structures damaged or destroyed. Evacuate a few blocks inland.
  4. Category 4 – Extreme – Extensive damage all around. Collapsed roofs, mobile homes demolished. Evacuate 6 miles inland.
  5. Category 5 – Catastrophic – Severe damage. Total roof failure at residential and industrial buildings. Complete buildings destroyed. Major damage to lower floors. Evacuate 10 miles inland.

Dangers of Fierce Wind

According to the National Hurricane Center (NHC), heavy hurricane-force winds, if 74-mph or more, can endanger you and severely damage property. It is suggested that people evacuate regularly affected areas before the onset of heavy wind to ensure safety. Should your area regularly be affected by such extreme conditions, it is important to look into preventative measures to protect not only yourself, but your property and investments. As these conditions are highly dangerous, it is important to think of your own safety and evacuate if need be. Make sure you are prepared and have the proper precautions in place.
